Correcting the alignment of teeth (Braces):

Tooth Removal and other procedures

It's not necessary to remove tooth in all cases. Any decayed teeth should be filled and the teeth sometimes need to be cleaned before orthodontic treatment is started. Sometimes it is necessary to remove teeth to gain sufficient space to align the remaining teeth.

Braces (bands, brackets and wires) are usually made of stainless steel although clear brackets and tooth color ceramic brackets are available.

Time duration depends on severity of malalignment the way of treatment done and patient co-operation for treatment. Generally treatment completes within 18-24 months, but it may take longer or short duration to be completed.

After completion of orthodontic treatment all the braces and wiring are removed. But teeth to steady in their new position retention appliances are require which may be either fixed or removable. Appropriate use of retention appliance is necessary to hold teeth, according to instruction, if not than there are chances that the teeth may move back towards their original position.
